In the Event of a Death
Whether it is a sudden death or a long-term illness, the death
of a loved one often leaves us feeling lost and overwhelmed. There
are some immediate items that need to be taken care of. We provide
this page as a checklist of sorts. Feel free to print this page
for your reference or simply browse for the information you need.
What Can I Expect?
When you call us, we will ask for some basic information about
the deceased and a contact number where we will be able to reach
you. At this time or shortly after, we will arrange a time to meet
with you (and your family) either in our offices or at your home
to go over the options you have regarding the services for the deceased.
Does It Matter Where the Death Occurs?
In most cases, including
a hospital death, nursing home and out-of-state, you can call us
as soon as you are ready. This is especially important in out-of-state
deaths because contacting another funeral home where you are at
could result in extra charges. If you contact us first, we can
make all the necessary arrangements and avoid those extra charges.
When a death occurs at home, you must contact other authorities
first. If the deceased was in the HOSPICE program, you can simply
contact their nurse. If not a HOSPICE patient, you will need to contact
the local police department by dialing 911.
What Do I Need to Have Ready for the Arrangement Conference?
We will need some information to complete necessary documents and
the obituary. This information will include the following, if applicable:
- Full name of the deceased
- Date and place of birth
- Address
- Father’s name and birthplace
- Mother’s name, with
maiden name, and birthplace
- Spouse’s name (if wife, their
maiden name)
- Spouse’s birth date
- Date and location of marriage
- Social Security numbers (deceased’s
and spouse’s
if applicable)
- Education
- Last known occupation
- Military record
- Survivors and predeceased family members
- Club/organization memberships
- Hobbies/interests
We will also take this opportunity to explain your options and
discuss your preferences on the funeral ceremony, including if
you would like a visitation, church and cemetery services, merchandise
selections, music, pallbearers and also flowers and memorial
luncheons.
What Personal Items of the Deceased will you Need?
We will need
a recent photograph in order for us to see the facial features,
style the hair and apply makeup. We will also need a complete set
of clothing, as well as any accessories you would like them to
have on; such as eyeglasses, jewelry, rosary, medals, etc.
Who Else Do I Need to Contact?
There are many people who need to be contacted and everyone has
their own individual list. We have put together a short list that
should help you get thinking about some of the people that you
may need to contact.
- Relatives
- Friends
- Employers
- Executor of Estate
